First thing first DO NOT POP IT. No matter how desperate you are and how bad you want to.
LOOK OUT FOR THESE INGREDIENTS:
Since you cannot be running to the doc everytime your get a pimple here are a few ingredients to look out for, as suggested by leading dermatologists, in over the counter products or any cosmetic brand you are using.
· Benzoyl peroxide – to kill the acne causing bacteria and reduce inflammation
You can now find this gel as OTC in the market
· Salicylic acid – use a cleansing face wash or moisturizing cream with salicylic acid to help mildly exfoliate and unclog the pores.
· Hydrocortisone cream – It helps in reducing the redness to a large extent and helps in flattening the blemish overnight. Just use a very tiny amount on the pimple as using too much can lead to more acne breakouts.
· Topical retinoids – help reducing inflammation and prevent acne. Look for a good retinol serum from a good cosmetic brand but make sure you use it as a night treatment only and always use a good sunscreen in the morning without fail when you are using retinol based creams.
Tea Tree oil. A versatile antibacterial oil that works wonders as a spot treatment to zap that zit. Just dab some on a Q tip and apply it directly on the pimple. You may want to dilute it with another light carrier oil like sunflower or olive oil . Take two drops of tea tree oil with 10 drops of carrier oil and apply it twice a day.
As we said before, there are a lot of causes for acne and you should consult your doctor in case of a bad flare up. But in the meantime here are some that you should look out for.
Excess oil production, clogged pores, bacteria and inflammation, hormonal fluctuations can also trigger acne especially in teenagers and adults.
In recent years PCOS or PCOD has also been a culprit in acne breakouts. Stress, diet and lifestyle also largely contributes to an acne flareup. Keep a check on what products you use and always look out for “ non comedogenic “ words on the label.
Try investing in quality over quantity, your skin will thank you.
